Chinatown Shop Owner in Singapore Integrates Christian Faith into Traditional New Year Decorations, Sparking Unexpected Buying Frenzy
The well-known Singapore Chinatown shop “Orchid Chopsticks” has launched Christian-themed Lunar New Year decorations, blending Bible verses with traditional Chinese couplets. Designs
include doves symbolizing the Holy Spirit, olive branches representing peace, and a bilingual paper-cut featuring the “Fruit of the Spirit.”
Shop owner Zhao Hongjun shared that he began creating such products eight years ago, inspired by fellow church members. Initially, Chinese-imported items failed to meet local aesthetic
preferences, prompting him to develop original designs. During the 2025 Lunar New Year, the products went unexpectedly viral on social media, leading to a surge in orders. Even a mistaken
double-order shipment sold out completely—an outcome the Zhao couple attributes to “God’s blessing.”
Their designs not only preserve Chinese cultural traditions but also serve as a gentle medium for sharing the gospel within the community, attracting attention from both Christian and
non-Christian audiences.
