Thousand-Year-Old Gold Cross Pendant Discovered in Denmark May Rewrite History of Christianity’s Spread in Scandinavia
In 2025, an amateur archaeologist in Denmark discovered a gold cross pendant estimated to be around 1,050 years old, engraved with an image of the crucified Jesus. This artifact predates
Denmark’s famous Jelling Stones by about 50 years and may push back the timeline of Christianity’s arrival in Scandinavia to the Viking Age.
Archaeologists note that although some question whether such jewelry could have been worn by pagans, the depiction of the crucifix clearly indicates Christian belief. The pendant also shares
stylistic similarities with contemporaneous artifacts found in Sweden. This discovery challenges traditional narratives, suggesting that Christianity may have reached Denmark through trade
routes prior to royal conversion. The pendant is set to be exhibited at the Ribe Viking Center Museum.
